[Narrator] Lotus napkin fold.
The key to crisp napkin folds
is to start with a stiffly starched napkin.
Solid colors work best for this fold.
Start with a square flat napkin
with the back side up,
and fold the four corners in to meet at the center.
Make sure you smooth the edges each time
to flatten out the material,
and take the time to make a nice, even square.
Fold the four new outside corners
into the center just as you did the first time,
again, taking care to smooth the edges
and really create a nice even square.
This'll make it easier to pull your petals later.
Carefully turn the napkin over,
holding those folds in place,
and once again, fold the four outside corners
into the center of the square.
The material will feel quite thick.
Place a finger bowl in the center,
and use this to hold the folds down.
Reaching under the napkin,
carefully pull an inner corner up
to create the petals of your flower,
and repeat with the remaining three corners.
You'll need to hold the finger bowl in place
with one hand and work with your other hand
to pull out your petals.
Then begin pulling up the next layer of corners
in the same way.
This starts getting a little tricky,
but do persevere.
It's well worth the effort.
Take the time to shape the material as well.
This eventually creates the eight petals
of your lotus flower.
With complicated folds,
it's always a good idea
to practice before a dinner party
so you don't get stressed out while entertaining
for family or friends.
Fill the finger bowl with water,
and add a small orchid or other flower of your choice,
something that matches your menu,
and then the napkin's ready to set on the table.
