[Narrator] Making simple syrup.
Simple syrup lives up to its name.
It's a quick combination of sugar and water
that is extremely versatile
and really very easy to make.
It's just boiled briefly.
Today we'll make a simple syrup
for a cold drink.
We're using a ratio of two part sugar
to one part water.
We'll begin by adding the sugar and water
to a small sauce pan
and stir on low heat.
Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.
Other variations are three parts sugar
to one part water
for a cake or cookie glaze,
or one part sugar to one part water
for a candied fruit glaze.
You can also use simple syrup for making candy.
All of the sugar has now dissolved,
so now it's time to turn the heat to high
and bring it to a boil.
Once it's boiling,
don't stir the syrup or the sugar could crystallize.
Okay, it's boiling, and it's become sparkling clear,
so that means our syrup is ready.
We've let it cool to room temperature,
so we'll pour some into this little carafe,
and it's ready to serve.
It's great to make a big batch of this
since simple syrup will keep for up to three months.
We'll just serve ours today
with a nice fruity daiquiri,
and don't forget to stir well,
the perfect drink for any day.
