Prepare this sauce 2 days ahead of your party for the flavors to meld. Any extra freezes well.

Ingredients

2 cups ketchup
1/2 cup minced red onion
1 quart water
1 cup cider vinegar
2 tablespoons paprika
1 tablespoon honey
1/4 cup each dark-brown sugar, chili powder, fresh lemon juice and Worcestershire sauce
3 cloves of garlic, very finely minced

Preparation

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a heavy saucepan. Bring to a slow boil; cook until thickened (25-30 minutes), stirring constantly to prevent the sauce from scorching. Strain into a bowl to remove the onion and garlic. Cool, then refrigerate for 2 days.
